MONTERREY, MEX--A 13-point second quarter propelled La Raza de Monterrey to a 24-12 victory over the Chicago Storm tonight in Monterrey. It is the Storm’s third straight loss while La Raza have won their fifth on the trot.
After the Storm’s Stephen Brust cancelled out Genoni Martinez’s opening goal, things went decidedly downhill for the Storm. Ivan Medina and Dino Delevski would score within 59 seconds of each other. Fabinho would pull a couple points back for the Storm to make it 6-4 just 41 seconds later, but Ian Bennett would be called for charging and Martinez needed just one second of the power play to score.
Perdo Jimenez, Victor Santibanez (a three-point goal), and Jimenez again would then score in a span of 2:43 to make it 15-4 lead at halftime.
The Storm did show signs of coming back in the third quarter on goals by Mariano Bollella and Matthew Stewart, but Medina would score with two minutes remaining in the quarter to make it 17-8. Then, Martinez would score La Raza’s second three-point goal of the night shorthanded completing the hat trick.
Delevski then got his second of the match just seventeen seconds into the fourth quarter. A couple of consolation goals for the Storm by Stephen Armstrong and Bollella sandwiched in a Victor Negrete goal for the final count.
The same two teams will meet a week from Saturday (March 8) at the Sears Centre where the Storm will don green jerseys to be given at silent auction after the match. Kickoff is at 7pm.
